Channel 4′s Head of News & Current Affairs Dorothy Byrne has commissioned a special one-hour live Channel 4 News debate about the riots.

Made by ITN Productions with Chris Shaw as Executive Producer, the 60-minute special will air on Sat 13 Aug at 7pm.

Presented by Krishnan Guru-Murthy, the debate will explore the circumstances which sparked the series of rioting and looting that has spread across the capital and Birmingham and will confront the possible solutions.

Dorothy Byrne said: “These riots represent a national crisis. Confidence in the police to protect public safety has been undermined and many have felt that those in authority have been slow to respond. The sight of young people wrecking their neighbourhoods without hindrance has provoked outrage. These events raise some of the most important issues a democracy can face.”

The on-screen team for The Great British Weather, a new and live 4×60 series for BBC One was announced today. The programme is to be presented by Alexander Armstrong (The Armstrong And Miller Show, Have I Got News For You,) Carol Kirkwood (BBC Weather) and Chris Hollins (BBC Breakfast, Watchdog) alongside veteran weather presenters John Kettley, Michael Fish MBE, Bill Giles OBE and meteorologist Tomasz Schafernaker.

The Great British Weather is an interactive live series set to tap in to the nation’s obsession with weather. Finding out which clouds mean that a brolly is necessary and where to head for the most sunshine in Britain, the series also answers annoying weather questions; does it really rain cats and dogs – or does it actually rain frogs? Does red sky at night really mean shepherd’s delight? Why are there so many types of clouds and why are they so different?

The team will be led by comedian Alexander Armstrong who will be presenting alongside BBC Breakfast favourite and Strictly Come Dancing winner Chris Hollins and Carol Kirkwood, BBC weather presenter and three times winner of the best TV Weather Presenter at the Television and Radio Industry’s Club Awards.

Chris Hollins will get up close and personal with a basking shark in Cornwall, to find out why this enormous creature is attracted to the Gulf Stream.

Carol Kirkwood will also report on the weather, not from the safety of a BBC Studio – but from 15,000 feet in the air as she paraglides into the heart of an enormous cumulus cloud: How vast is it? How much does it weigh? What does it taste like? Carol will put her head in the clouds to find out.

The series, commissioned by Alison Kirkham, Commissioning Editor for Formats and Features BBC One, will also see Britain’s best-loved veteran weather presenters Bill Giles OBE, Michael Fish MBE and John Kettley each appearing on a show and joining The Great British Weather team in explaining why our weather is so diverse.

The team will also explain how the success of some of Britain’s biggest military operations, such as D-Day, were dependant on the technologically advanced weather forecasting of the time. Not only this, but the team will also help to debunk popular weather myths and explain fun weather facts, such as where the ultimate indispensible British accessory – the umbrella – came from.

The Great British Weather team, together with an iconic guest weather presenter will bring together their wealth of expertise and knowledge as viewers are invited to submit burning weather questions to the team in order to pick their meteorological brains. Why do over 100 tornadoes hit the UK each year? Why does the south east of England have so many storms? And where is the wettest place in Britain?

Specialist meteorological reporter and 2010 winner of the TRIC award for Best Weather Presente, Tomasz Schafernaker, will also join the team across the country as they visit Cornwall, the Lake District and Greenwich, London on its tour with a live and local audience at each destination.

Alison Kirkham says: “I am really excited by The Great British Weather presenting team. The aspiration for all Features programmes is to educate whilst entertaining and I feel confident this line-up can do just that, tapping into the Great British obsession with weather whilst delivering science, history and social history content in an engaging way.”

From the team behind BBC One’s Live At The Apollo, the Bafta-nominated Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow returns to BBC One this September for a second series, featuring special headline guests John Bishop, Kevin Bridges, Ardal O’ Hanlon, Sarah Millican, Tommy Tiernan, Noel Fielding as well as a host of new comedy talent.

Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow will travel around the UK visiting six of the most prestigious live theatre venues, unearthing a raft of comedy’s brightest new talent and finest comedians en route.

The first series aired on BBC One last summer to phenomenal success and regularly achieved audiences of over 5m viewers and went on to be nominated for a plethora of high-profile awards, including a Bafta, NTA (National TV Award), RTS Award and British Comedy Award. The series won an RTS North Award for Best TV Entertainment Show in 2009.

New, up-and-coming comedians who appeared in the first series of Comedy Roadshow are now established names in their own right – playing to sell-out crowds at some of the UK’s largest comedy venue’s, releasing top-selling DVDs and regularly appearing on television screens.

This is testament to Michael McInytre’s Comedy Roadshow and its unique ability to launch new comic’s careers and give them their turn in the spotlight on prime-time national television.

In each of the six episodes, Michael McIntyre will introduce a very special guest headline act as well as three of the best stand-ups from the UK comedy circuit, who will be new to a BBC One Saturday-night audience.

Headlining the Blackpool Grand Theatre is John Bishop, with guests Terry Alderton, Justin Moorhouse and Miles Jupp; Kevin Bridges headlines the Glasgow Theatre Royal with guests Daniel Sloss, Craig Campbell and Milton Jones; Ardal O’Hanlon headlines the Leeds Grand Theatre with guests Jack Whitehall, Andi Osho and Sean Collins; Sarah Millican headlines the Sunderland Empire Theatre with guests Simon Evans, Jimeon and Imran Yusif; Tommy Tiernan headlines the Dublin Olympia Theatre with guests Andrew Lawrence, Keith Farnan and Zoe Lyons; and Noel Fielding headlines the Bristol Hippodrome with Sean Walsh, Mike Gunn and Hal Cruttendon.

The BBC’s flagship film show Film 2010 is to return to BBC One this autumn, presented by Claudia Winkleman and new co-host, film journalist Danny Leigh.

Approaching its 40th anniversary, Film 2010 will also return with a new look, moving away from the previous monologue format to feature more discussion and debate than ever before.

Broadcasting live for the first time in its 40-year history, and with a longer running time of 40 minutes each week, Claudia and Danny will lead a range of topical debate and discussion on the latest news and releases from the world of film, joined in the studio by actors, filmmakers and well-known guest reviewers. The show will also feature regular reports on issues across the industry.

Alongside Claudia and Danny, regular contributors to the series will include Chris Hewitt, news editor of Empire magazine, and Antonia Quirke, novelist and journalist.

A film critic and journalist, Danny has written for a variety of newspapers and magazines, interviewing a range of actors and directors including Johnny Depp, Lars Von Trier and Samantha Morton. Since 2007, he has written a weekly online film column for The Guardian.

Danny said: “When I was a kid in the dim and distant Eighties, becoming ever more obsessed with movies, there were two places I could find out about them – my local fleapit cinema in Brighton and the BBC’s film programme with Barry Norman.

“Having been lucky enough to spend a chunk of the years since writing about film for a living, it entirely boggles my mind to have the chance to co-host the show now.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Claudia and we’ll have something for everyone from the casual Wednesday night passer-by to the most well-informed and passionate film fanatic.”

Claudia, who, alongside presenting a number of high-profile entertainment shows, also hosts a weekly arts show on BBC Radio 2, said: “I’m completely over the moon about Danny joining the team. He’s going to be a fantastic companion discussing all things film – from the latest Hollywood blockbuster to independent art-house cinema.

“We’re even going to discuss the merits of Speed 2 at the weekends – I’m being perfectly serious.”

The new live format will allow the show to tie into major events across the film calendar, with the new series launching to coincide with the 54th BFI London Film Festival.

The show will also offer viewers the chance to join in the debate through the show’s Facebook page and Twitter.

Female hedgehogs prefer to use the back gardens of semi-detached and terraced houses, rather than detached homes.

Such gardens provide ample food, but are safer, as female hedgehogs are less likely to be attacked by urban badgers, or be disturbed by dogs or people.

However, male hedgehogs take more risks and are more likely to roam across gardens of larger detached houses to find new mates, finds the study.

Details of the study are published in the journal Animal Behaviour.

Late night life

Hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) living in an urban environment have to adapt to many obstacles and potential hazards, including the threat of busy roads, pet dogs and a lack of suitable habitat.

In order to understand how they behave, scientists used small radio transmitters to track the night time movement of hedgehogs in the city of Bristol, UK.

This revealed hedgehogs are more active after midnight than before, perhaps in response to the marked reduction in human activity during the small hours of the morning.

This was true even when the weather was warm, and levels of food were high, further suggesting that avoiding people and dogs is a major part of their survival strategy.

“I was particularly surprised by the fact that the hedgehogs were so much less active before midnight,” says Professor Stephen Harris of the University of Bristol who undertook the study with colleagues from the University of Reading, UK.

“The risks posed by people, dogs and cars must be so high that they reduce their activity levels despite the food that is available.”

Hedgehogs prefer back gardens rather than front gardens.

Again, this may be because these are places where the insectivores are not exposed to humans or pet dogs being walked at night.

“There is a popular misconception that life for hedgehogs is a lot easier in towns, and that hedgehogs are more abundant in towns than in the countryside.

“In fact, life in towns is quite hard, and this is the first study to highlight some of these problems and how the hedgehogs adapt,” says Prof Harris.

The research also reveals that male hedgehogs choose different houses than females.

Urban badgers prefer to visit larger detached house gardens, which are easier to access and have more food.

Badgers predate on hedgehogs and female hedgehogs avoid them by preferring the relatively safer gardens of semi-detached and terraced houses.

Males though prefer the larger gardens of detached houses in the study area.

“Males take big risks in order to spread their genes,” says Professor Harris.

In other areas this pattern may differ.

“Many urban areas do not have badgers, and so in other areas I would expect [female] hedgehogs to use large detached gardens as well,” Prof Harris says.

Clayton Leão, 32 years old, was attending to the floor to speak with hosts Marco Antonio Ribeiro and Raimundo Rui, but decided to change his plans and make the interview via phone.

Apparently, Leão stopped his car for a few moments to talk with the reporters when he was attacked by three men who shot him three times in the head.

Everything could be heard live on the radio program broadcast by Radio Líder FM. The cell was still on and his wife, who was in the car beside him, began to shout:

“For the love of God, they killed Clayton here in Cascalheira!” “My God, they killed him!,” while the hosts called alive that the police rushed to the scene.

And so they did. Minutes later an ambulance and police were present in the scene but could not save commissioner’s life.
