Actress Liz Smith, best known as Mrs Cropley in The Vicar of Dibley and also Nana in The Royale Family died on Christmas Eve at the age of 95, a spokes person for the family has confirmed.

Liz was born Betty Gleadle on December 11 1921 and recently celebrating her 95th birthday.

Royle Family co-star Ralf Little tweeted “goodbye Nana”, saying that he was devastated to have lost two members of his “second family” in one year. Caroline Aherne, who starred as Denise and co-wrote the series died earlier this year.
