Ed was one of the first presenters on Radio 1 when it launched in 1967 and was the face of Friday tv favourite Crackerjack in the 1970s.

Crackerjack was so popular that Devon-born Ed said in 2014 he still couldn’t go into a pub without a punter shouting: “It’s Friday, it’s five to five … it’s Crackerjack!”

He leaves behind two children and five grandchildren.

Rocky Taylor, a friend of 40 years standing, said he died in hospital in Bournemouth. Mr Taylor said he had been told of his death by Ed’s ex-wife Chiara Mainwaring.

Ed, who became one of the best known names in radio and TV, said he stumbled into the industry by sheer accident as he always wanted to be a musician.
