Detectives Robbie Lewis and James Hathaway are returning to itv in six new episodes of Lewis, as one of ITV’s best-loved and most enduring dramas returns for a ninth series.
Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox reprise their roles as the detectives renowned for investigating Oxford’s most complex murders, alongside Angela Griffin (Mount Pleasant, Waterloo Road, Coronation Street) as Detective Sergeant Lizzie Maddox.
Steve Toussaint (DCI Banks, Scott & Bailey, Line of Duty) joins the cast as a new regular character, Chief Superintendent Joseph Moody. The high flying, by the book CS soon clashes with Robbie Lewis (Kevin Whately) over the latter’s more traditional approach to detective work. With forensic pathologist Laura Hobson (Clare Holman) contemplating early retirement, and the new boss piling on the pressure, will Lewis finally decide to call time on his policing career?
Meanwhile, after years of avoiding the thorny issue of family ties, Hathaway (Laurence Fox) is forced to confront his past as his surprised colleagues at Oxfordshire Police are introduced to his father and sister, played by Nicholas Jones (The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, Philomena) and Sally Scott (Vera, Coalition) as Philip N Hathaway and Nell Hathaway.
Also joining the cast for the first of the new films, ‘One For Sorrow,’ are Steve Pemberton (Inside No.9, Benidorm, Happy Valley) and Helen Schlesinger (The Hour, Casualty) as Ian and Vivienne Tedman, a university lecturer and her husband with connections to the death of psychology student and artist Talika Desai.
Against a murky backdrop of social media, drugs, taxidermy and alternative art, Lewis and Hathaway are called to investigate the death of over achieving student and amateur taxidermist, Talika Desai, by an apparent drug overdose. Ralf Little (Our Zoo, Married Single Other, The Royle Family) stars as art agent Sean Wilkinson, Tim Pigott-Smith (The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, Houdini) as taxidermist Jasper Hammond, and Naomi Scott (Terra Nova) as social media star Sahira Desai.
The new series of Lewis will go into production in May 2015 and once again feature the beautiful locations in and around the city of Oxford.
Lewis has been commissioned by ITV’s Director of Drama Steve November and Controller of Drama Victoria Fea.
An itv Studios production, the Producer is Chris Burt, who has been at the helm since the series first screened in 2006. The Executive Producer is Mammoth Screen’s Michele Buck, who continues to produce the series for itv Studios.
‘One For Sorrow’ is written by Helen Jenkins (Lewis, Holby City) and directed by Nick Laughland (Midsomer Murders, Lewis, Under The Greenwood Tree).
The creator of Morse, Colin Dexter, continues his association with Lewis acting as consultant on all aspects of production.
