A vintage Daimler famously driven by Arthur Daley in the tv comedy Minder is to go under the hammer in Birmingham.

The 1981 Daimler Sovereign, built by Jaguar, was one of a fleet of cars driven by TV’s most famous car dealer and all-round spiv Arthur Daley in the long-running ITV series.

And, in keeping with the ultimate wheeler-dealer’s style, the mileage on the classic beige motor is believed to be wrong.

Warwickshire-based Silverstone Auctioneers say the Daimler saloon has a recorded mileage of 33,677, but it had its odometer replaced when it had just 9,000 miles on the clock.

The car will take centre stage as Lot 117 at the Silverstone Auctions sale at the Practical Classics Restoration Show at the NEC on Saturday.

Actor George Cole – who played Daley – wanted to buy the car himself in 1985 but it was given away in a tv Times competition instead.

The car was raffled again in 2002 but the winner did not want it, so the luxury motor found its way to eBay where it was bought by its current owner.

The 4.2 litre vehicle – which is free from corrosion – has a new MOT as well as six months’ tax, and even comes with the original service book.

And despite not being seen in public for 12 years, the iconic car is expected to fetch between £10,000 and £15,000.

The Daimler Sovereign was built by Jaguar after the Midland car-maker took over The Daimler Company in 1960.

Daimlers were then manufactured using Jaguars as a model and the 1966 Sovereign was the second Daimler to be based on a Jaguar design.

The Series III Sovereign, built between 1979 and 1983, was based on the Jaguar XJ6 model.

Also appearing at the NEC auction is an original EastEnders milk float, which was first used in 1985 and could be seen in many scenes driving around Albert Square.

The battery-powered vehicle is painted in Express Dairies livery, but auctioneers said it requires some work to get it back into serviceable condition.

Nick Whale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions, said: “We’ve sold our fair share of famous vehicles in the past and it’s wonderful to be able to add these two fascinating lots to the list.”
