NEW DOCUMENTARIES TO SCRUTINISE MODERN CRIME

Channel 5 has commissioned three new documentaries that take a close look at modern crime in our country: ‘Britain’s Crime Capitals’ from Two Four, ‘Running Riot: Britain’s Teen Crims’ from Barcroft and ‘Watch Out, There’s a Shoplifter About’ from Watershed. All three have been commissioned by Channel 5 Commissioning Editor: Factual, Guy Davies and are set to air this year.

Britain’s Crime Capitals

Twofour has been commissioned to produce a 4 x 60’ series exploring Britain’s crime capitals for Channel 5.

Britain’s Crime Capitals, presented by Nick Wallis, exposes the fight on crime in some of Britain’s major cities including Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow and Manchester.

The series will explore Birmingham’s gang crime; Liverpool’s long battle with guns; Manchester and its war on drug related crime and Glasgow’s long association with knife crime and stabbing.

Exploring some of the most notorious areas, Britain’s Crime Capitals will give an up to the minute picture of the criminal activity facing the cities’ inhabitants. We’ll hear from the victims and criminals as well as those charged with trying to win the criminal wars on Britain’s city streets.

Channel 5 Commissioning Editor: Factual, Guy Davies said: “Britain’s Crime Capitals gets behind the headlines to explore how some of our biggest cities have become characterised by particular crimes. These stories are a fascinating way of looking at how crime develops and takes hold in Britain, how it is being tackled and how people are fighting back.”

Dan Adamson, Director of Programmes, Twofour, said: “The level and breadth of crime on Britain’s streets is a topic that impacts on us all. Through access to those on the front line, this series will explore some of Britain’s crime hot spots.”

The series will be executive produced by Dan Adamson for Twofour.

Running Riot: Britain’s Teen Crims W/T

‘Running Riot: Britain’s Teen Crims’ (W/T) explores the realities of life for some of Britain’s most notorious young offenders, and the incredible life-shattering crimes they perpetrate.

The 60-minute documentary follows the ‘ASBROS’ – two brothers amongst the country’s youngest ever to receive an ASBO (Anti-Social Behaviour Order) who terrorised a whole community for years. We also follow the story of a ruthless gang of teenage burglars from Hull, the ‘steaming’ gang set loose on London’s high streets, and a deviously clever schoolboy-turned-armed robber who targeted exclusive jewellery stores in disguise.

‘Running Riot: Britain’s Teen Crims’ (W/T) features interviews with perpetrators, police and victims, using cctv of unfolding events, and steps into the lives of some of the UK’s most prolific teenage criminals. Delivering a dramatic, blow-by-blow account of the shocking crimes committed by teenagers, the programme also explores and reveals the aftermath of the cases – are they likely to reform, or are they destined for a life of criminality? Are teenage years in trouble a passport to a life behind bars?

Channel 5 Commissioning Editor: Factual, Guy Davies said “Britain’s teenage crime underbelly is both tragic and fascinating – that such young lives can be already moulded in such a criminal direction is shocking and the cases in ‘Running Riot: Britain’s Teen Crims’ get under the skin of these kids’ stories.”

“‘Running Riot: Britain’s Teen Crims’ (W/T) looks under the hoodie, exploring the reality of youth crime in Britain. Barcroft Productions’ news heritage and expertise in gaining access to a challenging subculture in our society have combined well to deliver a topical and engaging film” said Barcroft Productions CEO Sam Barcroft.

‘Running Riot: Britain’s Teen Crims’ (W/T) is a Barcroft Productions co-production with Shine International for Channel 5.

Watch Out, There’s a Shoplifter About!

This 60 minute documentary from Watershed reveals the incredible deceit and trickery used by the sophisticated world of shoplifters, plus how to spot and shop them. Store thieves strike every seven minutes – and cost the retail industry £0.5bn every year. With access to amazing cctv footage of shoplifters in action, and exploring the cat and mouse game with those whose job it is to catch them, the documentary will expose the ever more sophisticated tricks and jaw-droppingly ingenious scams criminals use to steal their loot.

Candid interviews with shoplifters and the store detectives who catch them will guide viewers through the different techniques employed by the thieves. From cheating the checkouts, to distracting shop staff, to specially adapted outfits and props to aid the theft, to disabling security tabs; Watch Out, There’s a Shoplifter About! will cover everything you need to know about how and where store thieves operate.

Channel 5 Commissioning Editor: Factual, Guy Davies said: “With shoplifters telling us how and why they do it in extraordinary up front interviews and tons of extraordinary and fascinating clips, this film gets to the heart of the plague hitting Britain’s high streets”

Mark Rubens, MD at Watershed TV said: “There’s a cat and mouse battle taking place on every high street between rival armies of shoplifters and store detectives and Watch Out There’s A Shoplifter About reveals who’s winning.” The documentary will be executive produced by Mark Rubens for Watershed TV.
