Officers from the Guardia Civil in Spain rescued a French couple, aged 71 and 77, who were lost in the Sierra de Albuñuelas of Granada, after they had spent the last 16 hours following their GPS directions while attempting to reach Motril.
According to the report by the officers, the elderly couple were travelling in their vehicle from France towards Motril when, following the GPS directions, they left the highway and took the old national road known as the Carretera de la Cabra, or “goat road”, later to be diverted onto smaller lanes.
They drove for around 40 kilometres through forest tracks, until their car got stuck, at around midnight last night, in an area of the Sierra de Albuñuelas.
Aware of the emergency services number, the couple called 112 who alerted the Guardia Civil, who were unable to locate their coordinates until 16:00 on Tuesday afternoon, 16 hours after the call for help.
The officers, accompanied by local police, found the couple at around 18:00, said to be in good health, rescuing them back to civilisation.
