admin/Posted on /Comments Off

oneshowThe One Show comes to Gateshead for its second two-day Summer Festival, on 27 and 28 August. Once again, the free, family day out is packed full of familiar One Show faces and topics, with Newcastle, Gateshead and the North East at its heart.

At 7pm on Wednesday 28 August Alex Jones and Matt Baker present a live hour-long One Show from right outside Sage Gateshead in Gateshead Quays.

Visitors to The One Show Summer Festival main stage, hosted by Angellica Bell, can join Carrie Grant and The One Show choir in a Geordie-themed medley, plus pick up some Bollywood dance moves in The One Show dance class.

Reflecting key One Show themes, the Summer Festival will be made up of zoned areas – consumer finance, history, art, sport and science – all hosted by some of The One Show presenters alongside local experts.

Drawing on his own personal interest in history, Larry Lamb will be inviting Summer Festival visitors to share their stories of the region’s industrial heritage. Declan Curry and Jasmine Birtles tackle the essentials of consumer finance head-on and help people from Newcastle and Gateshead make their finances work to their advantage.

Christine Walkden will be giving advice on gardening in the North East and sharing ideas on autumn planting, and Olympian Iwan Thomas will help to illustrate how the North East’s glorious sporting heritage – athletics, football, rugby union and rowing to name just a few – can benefit personal health.

Back on the main stage, science presenter and comedian Steve Mould shares his own brand of interactive experiments and awe-inspiring feats of scientific knowhow to make science fun and approachable for all ages. To change the mood a little and celebrate that summer vibe, the one and only Rastamouse and Da Easy Crew extend their Summer Rocksteady Reggae Tour to take in Gateshead, as co-creator Michael De Souza presents a musical extravaganza of rhythm, reading, storytelling and music. Then there’s a chance for children to get hands on in the Rocksteady Reggae School.

The One Show presenter Matt Baker comments: “I’m so proud to be taking the One Show summer festival up to my neck of the woods, the North East. We’ll be in Gateshead next to the Sage on the River Tyne, so you’ll see for yourself what a vibrant part of Britain it is. Our One Show Summer Festival will be a brilliant way to add to a champion summer.”

Executive Producer, BBC Learning, Moray London, says “We’re excited to bring the second One Show Summer Festival to NewcastleGateshead. It will be a true celebration of the area and we can’t wait for people to join us at our events on Tues 27 & Weds 28 August, and at our live broadcast on Wednesday 28 at 7pm.”

Carol Bell, Head of Culture and Major Events at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, says: “We’re delighted to be working with the BBC to bring The One Show Summer Festival to NewcastleGateshead. The One Show has become an institution for Britons across the country who eagerly tune in and to host this special episode on Gateshead Quays is very exciting.

“NewcastleGateshead Quayside is home to some our best known icons; not least the famous Tyne Bridge and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. The show will be broadcast from outside Sage Gateshead and we’re working with the production team to uncover some of our most engaging stories and inspiring personalities – of which we have many.”

Highly interactive, everything in the consumer finance zone is aimed at arming consumers with practical information to apply immediately in their own lives. Steph McGovern will lead the activity along with experts Jasmine Birtles and Declan Curry to help visitors find out more about a range of money matters: from getting the most from your holiday cash to knowing your rights and safe borrowing. Meanwhile our fun, engaging Lingo Bingo game demystifies the small print.

With the help of local history experts, Larry Lamb helps visitors to bring the area’s industrial history to life. Nothing beats personal stories, and The One Show Summer Festival gives visitors a chance to put their own questions and share their own family stories.

The One Show Summer Festival is always on the hunt for the definite mass participation art project – and we’ve found it right here in NewcastleGateshead. It’s a chance for people to be a part of a special collaboration, adding their own personal contribution to a bigger Tynescape. There’s no substitute: you’ll have to be here to be a part of it…

Trying something new as a family is at the heart of our Sports Zone, and where better to do it than at the heart of England’s athletic, football, half marathon and rugby union tradition? Iwan Thomas is on hand to have a go at some of the North East’s finest sports, whilst encouraging visitors to give it another go. Or have a go for the first time…

Most of us know that NewcastleGateshead is a tidal watery location, but who really understands the science of the place? Experimentation is the theme of the science zone, where visitors will be amused and amazed by what they see.

The One Show Summer Festival in NewcastleGateshead will take place on the 27 and 28 of August, 2013. The event is free and family friendly and will be situated at Gateshead Quays. No tickets required.

Open Tuesday 10:30-18:30, Wednesday 11:00-19:00.
