A bag can disappear in a matter of seconds and the thieves are often out of sight before you realise it has gone. We want to prevent those who work, live or visit the Square Mile from falling victim to thieves.
Historically thefts increase during the summer months, when more people are out enjoying the weather in cafes, restaurants, parks and bars. Over the next few months our officers will be undertaking an operation which aims to reduce thefts in the city.
Detective Inspector Edelle Michaels, from City of London Police said: “Every police officer in the force will play a part in this operation in order to prevent those visiting the Square Mile from becoming a victim of this type of crime.
‘We want to send out a clear message that thieves are not welcome in the City. ”
Officers will be carrying out extra patrols in areas where police information indicates thieves often target. Whilst their presence will provide a deterrent to thieves, the officers will also be educating the public on the best ways to look after their property.
The force has had reports of a few thefts recently in the breakfast areas of hotels in the City where people have left their belongings at their table whilst getting their food. Opportunist thieves will strike anywhere, it is always best to keep your belongings with you at all times.
Another item often targeted by thieves is bikes. More people cycle to work in the summer, ensure your bike is there when you return by locking it securely. Visit our advice section on how to keep your belongings safe.
