Whitechapel – Episode 2
Monday, 18 October 2010, 9:00PM – 10:00PM
Miles informs Chandler of another murder. Billy Bunhill has been shot inside another Kray haunt, a pub called ‘The Blind Beggar’. Chandler’s interest is piqued, the murder mirrors George Cornell’s killing by Ronnie Kray in 1966. The only difference this time is that instead of going into hiding the barmaid offers up the name of the killer, Jimmy Kray and that he lives down the road with his mother, Angie Brooks.
The team are stunned – does a Kray really exist? One thing’s for sure, just as Buchan predicted, Steven Dukes is no longer their prime suspect. Waving goodbye to his boyfriend, ‘Blonde Boy’, the team realise they have met Jimmy before – he was ‘the builder’ in Episode 2. Chandler and Miles interview Angie who reveals she visited Ronnie in Broadmoor and he provided her with a sperm sample. The next big shock for the team is that Angie ended up with identical twins, Jimmy and Johnny – she shows them their birth certificate as proof.
Chandler approaches OCD for information about the new twins but Cazenove brushes him away, they are nothing but small time thugs. He then finds Miles in a fury. In a line up, the barmaid couldn’t tell the identical twins apart. They walk free and laugh in Chandler’s face when he warns them they won’t be this lucky again. Chandler turns to Dr Llewellyn who explains forensics will not show which twin entered the pub, they need to investigate the Krays the old fashioned way.
Chandler sees Buchan who has gone into hiding, certain he’s next on the twin’s hit list. He tells Chandler that Nipper Read’s attention to detail finally captured the Krays – Chandler may have the answer without realising it. Chandler tasks the team with finding out everything they can about the twins, however, the results are very sparse. Chandler believes that like the Krays, the twins would have a Kingmaker who introduced them to the underworld, their priority is to find this man.
Chandler’s dogged investigations rattle the twins and he’s bundled into a car for a meeting. Aside from being an intimidating experience, the meeting does prove that Jimmy is clearly insane and Johnny is finding it hard to control him. Indeed this explain why Billy, a man with no connections to ‘the Firm’ was killed, Jimmy killed him because he could. Refusing to become an official source, Jack Cheshire tells Chandler the answers lie in the Congo, where Jimmy and Johnny Kray spent several years as mercenaries. Chandler is left questioning just whose side Cheshire is on but charges the newly returned Kent with looking into the Congo.
Miles finds himself thinking back to his father. Chandler wants Miles to have closure on ‘Freddie the Dips’ disappearance and so secretly offers Buchan the cold case.
The team’s perseverance leads them into personal jeopardy, Miles’ son is threatened, Kent is terrorised by uniformed officers, clearly on the twins’ payroll. Mansell receives a wreath delivered at his home, McCormack has a gun pointed at his head and Chandler is beaten mercilessly before being dumped in Epping Forest.
The first person Chandler sees is Jack Cheshire, who hands him his final clue, information on a peer, Lord Hessle along with some incriminating photographs, which should make him testify against the twins.
Charged with this new information, Chandler steams into the incident room to find it has been burgled. With no evidence of a break in, this is clearly an inside job. Kent was the last man in the office – has he been turned? All this stress serves to heighten Chandler’s OCD and Miles starts to worry for his sanity. Brushing his concern aside, Chandler focuses on bringing in Lord Hessle and with him agreeing to testify in exchange for witness immunity Chandler asks Kent to set up a meeting with the CPS. The meeting goes well and the team feel that at last they are on the winning side, only for minutes later the real CPS lawyer to arrive apologising for his delay – his car had been tampered with. Chandler is enraged and has no option but to suspect Kent as having leaked details of the meeting and sends him home.
At rock bottom Chandler asks for Buchan’s help. Buchan wonders if Jimmy’s insanity could be a way to separate the twins? Chandler asks Cheshire to set up a meeting with Johnny – the confirmation comes back via Fitz, they are to meet at The Carpenter’s Arms. It takes Chandler a while to leave his office. His OCD has worsened and he almost becomes a prisoner to the ritual of turning the light switch on and off.
Save for Chandler, Miles and Fitz, The Carpenter’s Arms is empty. The situation becomes more ominous when Jack Cheshire enters. Ignoring the men he checks the pub before leaving.
A car pulls up – it’s Jimmy and Johnny quashing Chandler’s plans to separate them. They rake the pub with automatic fire. Inside, Chandler spots a gun and fires back. When their ammunition is spent, the twins leave. Miles and Chandler race to Fitz who looks dead. A quick search reveals an armoured vest (he knew it was an ambush). Miles is furious and they arrest him for conspiracy. Fitz tells them it will do no good, the twins have everyone under their power – Chandler’s the only one trying to stop them and he’s on borrowed time.
