English signs to be banned

Argentinian councillor Jacinta ‘Poly’ Tritten has sent a draft proposal to the Deliberative Council of La Plata to forbid the use of English language words by local businesses.

There is a trend in most native Spanish language countries to use English words such as “fast food”, “gym”, “parking” and “shopping” etc, as it is considered to give the business a more trendy appeal. The proposal would insist that these words be replaced by their Spanish equivalent.

Some names and trademarks used by firms or companies as identification would be exempt from the “ban.”

“Language is one of the elements of a nation’s concept,” said the councillor.
