Storyville – Sync Or Swim

Monday 14 June 10.00-11.00pm BBC FOUR

A motley crew of middle-aged men, from train drivers and meat buyers to archivists and teachers, delves into the world of all-male synchronised swimming in a bid to escape the daily grind of work and family responsibilities. The unlikely enthusiasts form Sweden’s all-male team and set their sights on international competition.

Initially believing that they are the only all-male team in the world, they’re surprised to discover that countries including France, Germany and Japan also boast a national team. Spurred on by the prospect of victory, the men decide to enter the first unofficial All-Male World Championship in the sport, taking place in Milan in April, 2009.

That is a significant year for many in the team as over half of them turn 40. One of the men is Dylan Williams, who left his native Wales for Sweden with high expectations, lured by fond memories of holidays full of long summer nights and carefree love. A sudden pregnancy, a cold dark winter and a series of hapless jobs later, his dreams begin to fade and are replaced by the stress of trying to adapt to life in a new country – until he joins the synchronised swimming club, that is.

Sync Or Swim is a playfully poignant look at high kicks, nose clips and the art of turning 40.
